Hidden Preferences Found In AI Training
A new study reveals that AI models, like chatbots and virtual assistants, perform significantly better when assigned gender-neutral or male roles, compared to female roles.
Researchers at the University of Michigan put three popular AI models to the test (Flan-T5, LLaMA2, and OPT-instruct), asking them to answer 2457 questions while playing different social roles.
From doctor and teacher to friend and mentor, the models’ performance varied depending on the label attached.
Surprisingly, “friend” and “mentor” topped the charts, while roles like “teacher” and, oddly enough, “police” for one model lagged behind.
This means your LLM performs better when it thinks it’s your buddy, pal. (;
But here’s the kicker: when it came to gender, female roles consistently showed the weakest performance. This bias could stem from the data used to train these models, which might inadvertently reflect real-world gender stereotypes or the real-world itself.
Now, I predict this will eventually be fixed, but until then, use these tips for better outputs:
- Buddy Up: When interacting with AI, try framing your requests in terms of neutral or male-associated roles. Instead of asking your LLM, “What’s the recipe for tonight’s dinner?” consider saying, “Hey chef, whip me up something delicious!” You might be surprised at the improved response.
- Context is King: The study also found that giving the AI clear context about who they’re talking to boosts performance. (Pro tip- works with real life too.) So, starting your request with “I’m a busy parent looking for…” or “As a professional athlete, I need…” can help the AI tailor its response to your specific needs.

An Art Mystery Solved By AI
A new AI study has revealed that a portion of the famous Raphael painting, the Madonna della Rosa, was not actually painted by the Renaissance master himself but was confirmed to be painted by a mystery artist.
In layman’s terms, your boy got caught cheating.
The smoking gun? None other than the painting itself, or rather, one specific face within it: St. Joseph.
Art critics have long suspected that possibly Raphael’s student, Giulio Romano, may have painted this particular section, and after some detailed AI analysis, it confirmed the rumors of a second artist.
Using a custom AI algorithm trained on Raphael’s known works, researchers zeroed in on St. Joseph, that fella peeking out from the upper left corner.
The AI detected significant stylistic discrepancies between St. Joseph’s face and the rest of the painting.
By meticulously examining the painting’s brushstrokes, color palette, and shading at a microscopic level, the AI was able to identify subtle differences that eluded the human eye and officially solved the mystery.
As AI continues to evolve, who knows what hidden secrets it might unveil in the dusty corners of art history.
