Well, they arenât using a magical formula – the real ingredient is using the past works of other artists.
And the problem is many of these artists had no clue, let alone a say, in their work being used to teach AI how to copy their work.
To help tip the power balance back from AI companies toward artists, researchers at the University of Chicago have developed Nightshade.
A tool that gives artists the ability to âpoisonâ their digital art in order to stop developers from training AI systems on their work.
Nightshade changes the pixels of a digital image in order to trick an AI system into misinterpreting it â dogs become cats, cars become cows, and so forth.
Moreover, Nightshade’s data poisoning method is challenging to guard against.
It demands AI developers to identify and remove images with hidden poisoned pixels, which are intentionally hard to spot, even for software data scraping tools.
If, somehow, any poisoned images have already sneaked into an AI training dataset, they need to be found and removed.
If not, the AI model will keep generating wonky results until it’s retrained from scratch again.
P.S. The team intends to integrate Nightshade into an existing artist protection software called Glaze.
