Midjourney announced yesterday that the alpha version of their latest model, V6, is available for community testing during this winter break, starting right now!
What’s New?
- Enhanced Prompt Following: The V6 model boasts improved accuracy in following longer and more complex prompts.
- Improved Coherence and Model Knowledge: Experience a more coherent output with enhanced model understanding.
- Advanced Image Prompting and Remix: Elevate your art with improved image prompting capabilities.
- Text Drawing Ability: You can now include minor text elements in your creations (use “quotations” for text and tweak style settings for optimal results).
- Upgraded Upscalers: The new model introduces ‘subtle’ and ‘creative’ modes, increasing resolution by 2x.
V6 also requires a different prompting style compared to V5. It’s more sensitive to the quality of prompts, so avoid unnecessary fluff and be clear and explicit in your requests for more accurate results.
It’s better to talk to the model like you would another human being rather than filling your prompt with tokens like “award winning, 4K, ultra-realism, photorealistic”
A few things to note…
- This is the Alpha test phase: Expect frequent changes and improvements as the model evolves towards its full release.
- Fast hours & performance: V6 is going to be slower & cost more GPU time compared to V5, but is expected to become more efficient with optimization.

AI Can Pinpoint Locations From Photos 📍
You’re on vacation when you snap a selfie of yourself standing in front of a random mountain, looking high and mighty.
Later, you post it online and drop the smug caption, “IYKYK,” only to find out that thanks to the latest development in AI, your secret’s out… we all know.
A recent student project at Stanford University has developed an AI system called PIGEON that can accurately guess the location of photos, even ones it’s never seen before, with an impressive 95% accuracy for country identification and within 25 miles for pinpoint location… Damn!
While this might seem like a cool party trick (and it is a cool party trick), it has significant implications for the future, the military, law enforcement, and more, while raising both exciting possibilities and unsettling privacy concerns.
What’s the good news?
- Speak to the past: PIGEON can help identify the location of old family photos, unearthing forgotten memories and enriching your family history. I wouldn’t be surprised in a few years if we see a string of family history companies pop up.
- Travel like a pro: Imagine planning your next trip based on real-time AI recommendations for destinations similar to that stunning photo you saw online. No more uppity influencers hiding their spots, their secret is out.
- Protecting our planet: AI geolocation can be a powerful tool for environmental monitoring, tracking deforestation, invasive species, and other ecological changes to inform conservation efforts. We only have one planet; we should try to protect it.
- Safety: With technology like this, I predict countries will be more safe. If law enforcement knows where a threat is coming from because some maniac posted a video online, well… that’s good for us.
What’s the not-so-good news?
- Privacy under fire: This technology raises serious privacy concerns. Imagine your every vacation snap revealing your whereabouts to anyone with access to the photo. Stalking, corporate tracking, and even government surveillance become real possibilities… and the future plot of a thriller movie.
- Big Brother in the shadows: The potential misuse of this technology by governments or corporations is a chilling prospect. Imagine being flagged for visiting a certain country or attending a specific event based solely on your online photos. This already happens today, and now it’s easier than ever.
As AI technology advances, geolocation will become even more accurate and widespread. PIGEON is just the tip of the iceberg.
