The EU has charged Meta with violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) over its “pay or consent” ad model.
Meta’s approach forces users to either pay for an ad-free experience or consent to personalized ads, without offering a free, less data-intensive option.
The EU’s preliminary ruling states this violates Article 5(2) of the DMA. If found in violation, Meta could face fines up to 10 percent of its global revenue, potentially reaching $13.4 billion.
