Meta Allows Calls For Violence
The Meta Oversight Board has ruled that Facebook and Instagram posts expressing a desire for Venezuelan paramilitary groups, known as ‘colectivos,’ to be killed are allowed.
The decision comes after Meta removed a Facebook post and left an Instagram post up, both containing statements against colectivos following Venezuela’s presidential election.
The board concluded these statements were “aspirational” rather than direct calls for violence, aligning with Meta’s policies that permit expressions of hope that violent actors will be killed without inciting specific actions.
X Wins Against California’s Content Moderation Law
A federal appeals court has blocked parts of California’s content moderation law requiring social platforms to report efforts to combat misinformation and hate speech, citing potential First Amendment violations.
This overturned a previous ruling that the reporting requirements were not overly burdensome. Twitter argued the law compelled speech against the platform’s will, a position supported by the appeals court’s ruling.

Internet Archive Loses Appeal In Ebook Case
The Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the Internet Archive’s practice of lending scanned ebooks without publisher approval, citing it as a violation of copyright law.
An earlier ruling stated the Internet Archive’s digital library constitutes widespread copying that harms authors’ rights to compensation.
This case stems from a lawsuit filed by four major publishers against the Internet Archive’s Open Library and National Emergency Library projects.
