AI: We’re Lovin’ It 🍟🥤
McDonald’s just announced a global partnership with Google that promises to create better experiences for its customers, restaurant teams, and employees.
Picture this:
You’re two hours into a road trip when your stomach starts to rumble. In front of you, a car is riding its brakes like a saddle rides a horse, and next to you, some sh*t-bag semi has been glued to your side for miles.
The mood is dark. It’s been mile after mile, of annoyance after annoyance, when you see a golden promise peaking over the horizon.
You squint to get a better view.
It’s those famous golden arches.
Your face curls into a frown.
“Mcdonald’s? McDonalds?! I don’t want that sh*t! They always screw up my order!” You grip the steering wheel a little tighter when you feel a little tap on your shoulder.
“No, Hunny.” Your wife beams. “McDonald’s added AI; they’re better now.”
Why? Because McDonald’s recently partnered with Google’s together to leverage Google’s cloud computing, AI technologies, and data to enhance restaurant operations with the potential to revolutionize fast food as we know it and ultimately give us a better burger experience.
Here are a few quick bites from the announcement – pun-fully intended.
- Global Tech Collaboration: McDonald’s and Google are partnering globally to bring Google Cloud technology to thousands of McDonald’s restaurants.
- Supersized Restaurant Tech: McDonald’s aims to boost its restaurant technology platform, utilizing Google Cloud’s hardware, data, and AI for improved efficiency.
- Digital Growth Opportunity: The collaboration is seen as a chance for McDonald’s to rapidly grow its digital business globally. For us, it gives us a potential case study for the mainstream use of AI.
- Platform Upgrades: McDonald’s plans significant upgrades to its mobile app and self-service kiosks, aiming for a consistent and faster deployment of innovations. AKA better service for you and me.
- Edge Computing Deployment: Google Cloud’s edge computing, along with Google Distributed Cloud, will be deployed to thousands of McDonald’s restaurants, enabling efficient local and cloud-based solutions.
No word yet if they’ll use the new technology to catch that damn hamburglar, but the bottom line is this:
With this partnership, AI is truly going “mainstream.” This gives us a glimpse into how companies may use AI to change life as we know it. More importantly, eating at McDonald’s next year just may be a better overall experience, which, selfishly, I’m pretty damn excited about.
Simply put, I’m lovin’ it.

Meta’s AI Image Generator Trained On 1.1B Instagram & Facebook Photos 🧪
On Wednesday, Meta also decided to step into the mainstream limelight with its free, standalone AI image generator: Imagine with Meta AI
This tool operates on the Emu image-synthesis model, which has been trained on a staggering 1.1 billion photos from Facebook and Instagram.
What makes Emu unique is that it leverages Meta’s rich collection of social media photos, which is a different approach compared to other programs that often use random images found online or bought from image libraries.
Meta’s “Imagine with Meta AI” website offers a fascinating experience for new users to AI, enabling the creation of images based on learned visual concepts.
To use this feature, you’ll need to login with your Meta account, and then, you can start prompting away with each session generates four high-resolution images – complete with a subtle watermark indicating their AI origin.
Despite its novelty, the Emu model’s capabilities are being continually evaluated. Tests reveal that while it excels in creating photorealistic images and includes a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, it faces challenges in text rendering and varied media outputs like watercolors or embroidery.
Its performance, in comparison to other AI image generators like Midjourney or DALL-E 3, is considered average, yet it notably filters out content like violence, explicit language, and celebrity images.
Meta’s commitment to ethical AI use is also evident in its plans to introduce watermarking for increased transparency. At the same time, using such a vast number of images, potentially including those of unwitting social media users, is basically the opposite of an ethical commitment.
Although, they did tick a box that said Facebook could know & use everything they post there, so maybe this is just ethically neutral.
Enough talk about the platform though, you can find the link to Imagine with Meta AI in the tools below 👇
