Major Companies Reading All Your Messages
A software startup named Aware is utilizing artificial intelligence to monitor employee communications across platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Workplace by Meta.
Major American corporations like Starbucks, Chevron, T-Mobile, Walmart, and Delta are among Aware’s clientele, collectively scrutinizing up to 20 billion messages from over 3 million employees.
However, the integration of AI for surveillance has sparked a debate among experts regarding privacy concerns and the reliability of AI in making fair judgments.
Critics argue that the technology’s current limitations in explain-ability could lead to misunderstandings and unjust accusations.
For instance, Aware’s eDiscovery feature, which flags messages for potential policy violations, can reveal an individual’s identity in extreme cases, raising questions about confidentiality and the accuracy of AI assessments.
Despite these concerns, companies justify the use of Aware’s technology as a means to monitor employee sentiment towards company policies or campaigns, and to maintain legal compliance.
The tool’s ability to analyze text and images for “toxic behavior” is seen as a proactive step in fostering a safer workplace environment. And while I disagree with the premise, I can agree that as long as these messages are being sent on company chats [and likely on company time]… it’s fair game.

Time For Countries To Develop Their AI
Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, has called for countries to develop their own “sovereign AI” infrastructure. Meaning, nations take full ownership and responsibility for their AI capabilities, data collection, and development.
When Jensen Huang speaks, the world listens – literally.
Recently, Huang spoke at the World Government Summit in Dubai, stressing the need for countries to develop their own AI infrastructure.
This move, termed “sovereign AI” [sounds like a social studies assignment], entails nations taking ownership of their data and intelligence production as opposed to those big boxy companies.
Huang’s remarks are controversial – certainly conversation-worthy. They underscored the significance of cultural preservation and data sovereignty in the age of AI. It’s important to remember that we’re still at the very beginning of AI optimization and are still seeing how it’s going to shape the world. Governments will want to get our input in while they still can.
Huang argues that sovereign AI enables countries to codify their culture, history, and societal intelligence into AI systems, ensuring they reflect local languages, customs, and values. This approach not only safeguards against cultural biases in AI but also fosters economic growth and innovation on a global scale – stuff all world leaders want.
Additionally, the increasing accessibility of AI technologies opens doors for individuals to engage in AI development, contribute to societal progress, and navigate evolving job markets.
Long story short, Huang wants to get his input in while he still can. Time will tell if countries will actually follow his lead.
