Google AI Solved An Unsolvable Problem 🧠

Google DeepMind’s latest AI tool, FunSearch, had a groundbreaking achievement in pure mathematics by solving the infamous “cap set problem.”

FunSearch was developed using a LLM named Codey, based on Google’s PaLM 2 and fine-tuned on computer code, and it represents a significant leap in AI’s capability to contribute to scientific discovery.

Unlike DeepMind’s previous AI tools, which treated math problems like puzzles in games like Go or chess, FunSearch uses a different approach:

First, it uses Codey to generate potential solutions for problems expressed in Python code.
Then, a secondary algorithm then evaluates these suggestions, refining and iterating until a viable solution emerges.

This process led to the discovery of a novel solution to the cap set problem, a complex mathematical challenge involving the arrangement of dots on a graph paper without forming a straight line.

Terence Tao, a renowned mathematician and Fields Medalist, has expressed his interest in this method, seeing it as a promising way to leverage the power of large language models in mathematics.

FunSearch’s versatility extends beyond just one problem. It was also applied to the “bin packing problem,” where it generated a more efficient solution than those devised by humans.
