Chrome Gets Another Update

Our friends at Google have once again made AI news. (Who would have thought? 😉)

This time, they added three new generative AI features to everyone’s favorite browser: Chrome.

The features are based on three points: organization, customization & writing help… because no one likes to get roasted online for a simple “you’re” vs. “your” slip-up. Let’s break it down.

Available now:

  • Tab Organizer: Tired of drowning in open tabs? Me too. This nifty feature automatically groups similar tabs together, making it easier to manage your browsing chaos. You can access it by right-clicking on a tab and selecting “Organize Similar Tabs.”

  • AI Theme Creator: Feeling bored of your basic ass browser? Embrace your inner designer with this AI theme creator. Simply describe your desired mood, style, and colors, and Chrome will generate a unique theme for you. You can find it in the “Customize Chrome” side panel under “Change theme” and then “Create with AI.”

Coming next month:

  • Writing Assistant: Trust us… we too feel the pressure of posting online. This helpful feature will provide suggestions and sentence starters to help you craft clear, concise emails, reviews, and social media posts. You’ll be able to access it by right-clicking on a text box or field on any website and selecting “Help me write.”

Google Cancels Contract With Firm That Trained Bard

Google ended its contract with Appen, an Australian company specializing in data annotation crucial for training AI models. This decision was revealed in a story by Emilia David, a reporter with expertise in AI and its intersection with technology and finance.

This move by Google was part of a broader strategy to optimize vendor operations across Alphabet, its parent company.

Courtenay Mencini, a spokesperson for Google, emphasized that this decision was aligned with ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency in supplier partnerships.

The impact on Appen was immediate and significant. The company, which reported earnings of $273 million in the last fiscal year, with $82.8 million coming from Google alone, notified the Australian Securities Exchange about this unforeseen setback, highlighting the absence of prior knowledge of Google’s decision.

Appen’s influence in the AI training realm extends beyond Google, with notable clients like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. However, the loss of the Google contract puts a spotlight on the financial and operational challenges the company may face going forward.

This reflects the complex and often contentious relationship between large tech companies, their contractors, and the human workforce that underpins the AI industry.
