Vulnerable Mr. ChatGPT

Researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have developed an AI chatbot designed to “jailbreak” other chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard.

This AI, named “Masterkey,” was able to bypass safety measures and make these models generate prohibited content.

P.S. This isn’t the first time this has happened either…

The NTU team reverse-engineered popular language models to find weaknesses in their defenses, such as keyword scanning.

Surprisingly, simple tactics like adding spaces between characters or using hypothetical scenarios were effective in bypassing these defenses.

Masterkey was trained to understand and exploit these vulnerabilities, allowing it to autonomously devise new methods to trick language models into inappropriate responses.

This research, like previous controlled exploits, aims to expose and improve AI security rather than create malicious AI, has been shared with OpenAI and Google.

It is detailed in a study available on the arXiv preprint service, awaiting peer review.
