We all know the drill: death is the giant elephant in the room that’s waiting for us at the end of the conveyor belt called life.
(Sorry for the dark dosage of reality this early in the day.)
But what if AI could bridge that gap, letting us chat with our loved ones who’ve moved on?
Enter China’s “ghost bots,” the brainchild of companies like Super Brain.
Super Brain essentially creates avatars that mimic the deceased’s quirks, humor, and even the warm glow of their smile. It can essentially provide a little bit of comfort when you want to be comforted. After all, if you’ve ever lost someone, you know what it’s like to want to see them one more time.
AI firm Super Brain charges between 10,000 and 20,000 yuan ($1,400-$2,800) to create a basic avatar of a deceased loved one within about 20 days.
But this digital séance comes with ethical costs.
Can we truly resurrect a soul in code?
Can we truly become Dr. Frankenstein and resurrect the dead?
Spoiler alert: we can’t.
While companies like Super Brain are certainly changing the way we talk about death (case and point…uh, right now!), the question becomes, will this truly help us move on?
The truth, like most things in life, isn’t black and white but a shade of nuance. Super Brain is certainly shaking things up, forcing us to confront uncomfortable questions and rewrite the script on dealing with loss.
Will these digital echoes help us heal or keep us stuck in an “almost there” purgatory? That, my friend, is the million-dollar question with a million different answers.
